n8n or Make for accounting and finance work?

Compare n8n and Make for Canadian accounting teams: role-specific choices, billing, connectors, Canadian records and tests to run before buying.

Not legal or tax advice. Confirm obligations, permissions and record locations for your firm.

The short answer by job

Make is a useful first candidate for a small, straightforward process when its app has the exact operation you need. n8n deserves a closer look for substantial branching or Canadian self-hosting. Neither choice removes the need to monitor the run and review financial writes.

Work Start the comparison here Why this is a candidate, not a guarantee
Bookkeeping Bookkeepers Wave and Dext module scope matters more than an app logo.
Practice administration Accountants Establish engagement and onboarding controls across clients.
Cash and close reporting CFOs/controllers Separate a small approval flow from a multi-entity reporting pull.
Pre-payroll Payroll Minimise employee data and keep payroll decisions in the payroll system.
Seasonal appointments Tax preparers Model the busy months and billing commitment separately.

Check operations, not connector counts

Connector evidence checked 17 October 2026:

App n8n evidence Make evidence Check before committing
QuickBooks Online Documented node operations Documented app Canadian OAuth company and GST/HST tax codes remain untested.
Xero Native node identified in supplied research; exact report operation needs testing Documented app Verify the required report, tenant and permissions.
Wave A built-in node was not verified in this review Make-maintained app Confirm the actual transaction and tax operation.
Dext A built-in node was not verified in this review Client and activity modules The listed modules do not establish receipt extraction support.
ADP Canadian product fit not verified Workforce Now app Canada edition, API access and required payroll operation remain unverified.

Try the current capture-to-ledger process before rebuilding it. A Dext or Hubdoc subscription is a reason to inspect the working native connection first. Do not replace it merely to add an orchestration tool.

Map the data before choosing a host

n8n Cloud identifies Frankfurt as its hosting location. Make offers US or EU organisation regions, fixed when you create the organisation. Neither reviewed cloud offering lists a Canadian region as of 17 October 2026.

Self-hosted n8n gives your firm a Canadian hosting option for its own database, files and execution history. A Toronto server alone cannot keep the whole workflow in Canada. Check the database, backups, monitoring, email, OCR and every API endpoint separately. Make’s AI routing documentation also distinguishes the organisation zone from the model’s processing region.

CRA’s records guidance generally requires records in Canada unless written permission applies. Electronic access from Canada does not make a foreign-held record Canadian-held. This recordkeeping rule and the privacy rules governing processing are different questions. The Privacy Commissioner’s guidance explains accountability for cross-border processing under PIPEDA. Confirm applicable provincial and professional obligations as well.

Compare usage before comparing subscriptions

As checked 17 October 2026, n8n advertises Starter at EUR20/month billed annually for 2,500 executions, and Pro at EUR50/month billed annually for 10,000. An execution is a workflow run. Account separately for extra triggers, retries and sub-workflow billing rules in your tested design. Business is a self-hosted plan, not a Cloud upgrade.

Make’s advertised starting plans include Free with 1,000 credits/month and Core starting at US$9/month for 10,000 credits. Most ordinary module actions use a credit; bundles, polling and AI features can change consumption. Confirm the term, price and limits at checkout. Higher credit-tier prices and non-annual prices were not verified here.

Planning example, assumptions shown Make usage estimate n8n usage estimate Decision supported
150 documents, six ordinary billable actions per document 900 credits before overhead 150 single-trigger runs before retries A small Make flow may fit Free, but its 100-credit margin is narrow.
3,000 documents, six ordinary billable actions per document 18,000 credits before overhead 3,000 single-trigger runs before retries Compare an actual higher-tier Make quote with n8n Pro; no cheaper-tool verdict follows from counts alone.

DigitalOcean lists a 2 GiB Basic server at US$12/month and a Toronto region. This is an illustrative server cost, not an n8n sizing recommendation or a managed-service quote. Add backups, storage, monitoring, AI/OCR and maintenance. n8n’s hosting guide describes the technical responsibilities. Community Edition has different features and licence terms from paid plans. Prices retain published currencies; no CAD conversion is included.

Catch a stopped process

Assign an owner to authentication failures, exhausted credits and missing scheduled runs. Test an expired connection and a successful run returning zero records. Reconcile destination IDs before retrying a write that timed out. A green run indicator does not establish a complete ledger.

Continue with a workflow design

The n8n finance collection lists workflow references. The document automation collection supplies field maps and review flows. The Grok Bot, OpenClaw and Dots collections cover other task formats. Return to all comparisons.

Frequently asked questions

Does either cloud tool offer a Canadian region?

The reviewed public offerings list Frankfurt for n8n Cloud and US/EU organisation regions for Make. Canadian self-hosting gives control over n8n’s local storage, but connected services need separate checks.

Do the QuickBooks connectors work with Canadian companies?

Both platforms document QuickBooks operations, but their built-in connection and GST/HST handling were not tested against a Canadian company in this research. Require a Canadian sandbox test.

Which tool is cheaper?

Count the tested workflow’s triggers, actions, bundles, polling and retries, then include connected services and maintenance. A low subscription price does not establish total cost.

Do we need a new automation platform?

Check your accounting or practice-management system’s existing rules and integrations first. Add another platform only for a named gap.
