n8n or Make for cash reporting and approvals?

Compare a small Make approval flow with n8n reporting logic. Plan entity-level cash pulls, source reconciliation and controller-reviewed month-end commentary.

Start with the smaller approval decision

A controller with a working ledger may need only a reviewed exception message when a transaction crosses a threshold. Make is a fair first candidate for that short process. Its Xero documentation lists Watch Bank Transactions, alongside other accounting operations.

For recurring multi-entity cash pulls, substantial normalization and variance rules, compare n8n’s execution model with a measured Make scenario. Do not add a second platform simply because reporting sounds technical.

A bank-summary report still belongs to an entity

Xero’s official SDK documents a BankSummary report operation that requires a tenant ID. This is the additional reporting fact behind this guide. A workflow must preserve the entity reference when it collects results; the endpoint is not proof of a ready-made group consolidation.

Specify currency and period beside each number. Have the controller define intercompany treatment, FX conversion and the treatment of stale or missing sources. Neither platform should invent those rules.

Reconcile before drafting commentary

For each entity, keep the report date, source ID and balance-check result. A missing entity should block a complete-group label. Draft variance notes only from the approved table, with a source reference beside each claim. The controller resolves unexplained movements and approves the final text.

Price the reporting path you will run

A daily batched design might start 30 times in a 30-day month. Per-entity webhook triggers, retries or separate sub-workflows can produce a different n8n count. Make usage depends on the modules and bundles actually processed. Benchmark both paths with synthetic entities, then use the finance cost comparison. No higher-tier Make price or measured savings is claimed.

Acceptance test

Use three synthetic entities, one stale report and a duplicated tenant reference. Expect an incomplete pack with a named exception owner. After correcting the data, reconcile each entity to its approved report and confirm that a replay does not duplicate the delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Can either tool consolidate a group automatically?

A source report API does not define consolidation policy. The controller must approve entity mapping, currency, period and intercompany treatment before the workflow can produce a group view.

Can AI write month-end commentary?

It can draft commentary from approved figures. The controller verifies the figures, explanation and source references before delivery.

Is Make a fair option for controllers?

Yes. A short event-to-approver process may suit Make. Compare report access and actual usage for a longer reporting path.
