Make or n8n for a Canadian bookkeeper?
Compare Make and n8n for Wave, QuickBooks and Xero bookkeeping. Check Dext module limits, receipt-review steps and honest small-volume cost assumptions.
Not legal or tax advice. Confirm obligations, permissions and record locations for your firm.
Start with the capture process you already pay for
If receipts already reach the correct ledger through your capture app, keep that path until a specific failure justifies changing it. Add orchestration for the missing review or follow-up step. Replacing capture, extraction and posting at once makes the result harder to test.
Make is a strong candidate for a small Wave-based process because it publishes a Wave app. n8n is worth testing for lengthy extraction checks and branching. The technical owner and review workload belong in the cost comparison.
Wave and Dext need different tests
Evidence checked 17 October 2026:
| App | Verified capability | Limit of this evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Wave on Make | Published transaction, sales-tax and invoice operations | Your business plan, permissions and tax mapping still need testing. |
| Dext on Make | Get/List Clients, client activity and an authorised API-call module | A receipt-extraction endpoint is not established by this module list. |
| QuickBooks on either tool | Published node/app operations | Canada edition and GST/HST behaviour remain untested here. |
The Dext activity modules may suit a client-health digest. A generic API-call module still needs a documented endpoint and permission. Do not promise receipt access from the presence of that module.
Put a review between extraction and the ledger
Prepare the supplier, invoice date, total, currency and tax evidence from a selected document. Hold missing or conflicting values for the bookkeeper. Keep supplier registration validation separate from checking whether a field exists.
The GST/HST field-check guide explains the general $100 and $500 documentary bands with source links. Documentary completeness does not establish entitlement to claim an input tax credit. This is not legal or tax advice.
Estimate a solo process without declaring a winner
Example, assumptions shown: 150 receipts per month with six ordinary Make actions each produces 900 credits before overhead. One n8n trigger per receipt produces 150 runs before retries. Compare that with polling, OCR charges and the actual subscription term. Make Free’s 1,000-credit allocation leaves little margin in this example.
At 3,000 documents, the same arithmetic gives 18,000 Make credits and 3,000 n8n runs. The higher-tier Make quote was not verified. The hub’s pricing section explains why counts alone do not prove which costs less.
Test tax mapping and duplicate handling
Use synthetic CAD documents at 99.99, 100.00, 499.99 and 500.00, plus a missing currency and a credit note. Compare the proposed result with the source. Replay one receipt under a new filename and confirm it cannot silently create a second ledger entry. Test a revoked QuickBooks connection and an ambiguous destination write.
Before using real client records, review PIPEDA processing accountability and the archive’s actual location. No connector or document extraction has been tested against a Canadian client account in this review.

Frequently asked questions
Does Make connect to Wave?
Make publishes a maintained Wave app with accounting operations. Verify the exact transaction type, permissions and Canadian tax mapping before a live write.
Does Make’s Dext app extract receipts?
The reviewed module list establishes client and activity operations plus a generic API call. It does not establish a receipt-extraction endpoint.
Can a complete receipt be claimed automatically?
Field completeness and ITC entitlement are different decisions. The accountant or bookkeeper reviews the tax treatment and exceptions.
