Make or n8n for an Ontario law firm?
Compare Clio and Docusign connections, legal workflow costs and confidentiality controls. Find a tool choice for lawyers, paralegals and personal injury teams.
Not legal advice. Rules are summarised for planning. A licensee confirms every date and scope decision.
Try the existing Clio connection first
A firm that needs a signed document on a matter may already have the connection it needs. Clio documents its Docusign integration. Check the account’s region, plan and workflow before adding Make or n8n.
Make is a useful first candidate when a required step sits outside the native process. Its published Clio Manage and Docusign apps provide concrete operations to evaluate. n8n is a candidate when custom API logic or a controlled Canadian runtime justifies the implementation work.
What actually connects
Evidence checked 17 October 2026:
| System | Make evidence | n8n evidence | Decision limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clio Manage | Published maintained app with matter, contact and document triggers | First-party built-in node not verified in this review; custom API path identified in supplied research | Test the account region, OAuth permissions and exact operation. |
| Docusign | Published app with Watch Envelope Completed | First-party built-in node not verified here; API/community approaches require review | A completed envelope does not prove a conflict check is complete. |
| PCLaw, Actionstep, Unity, Divorcemate | No native connection verified in this review | No native connection verified in this review | Do not treat a missing search result as proof that integration is impossible. Ask the vendor about supported APIs/exports. |
An app listing does not guarantee document binaries, custom fields or every practice-management function. Keep an explicit operation test beside the recommendation.
Keep confidentiality in the tool decision
Not legal advice. The licensee assesses professional confidentiality, privilege and applicable privacy duties. A Canadian hosting choice is a design control, not a legal compliance certificate. n8n Cloud lists Frankfurt; Make’s organisation regions are US/EU. Self-hosted n8n can keep its local storage on a Canadian server, while outbound apps, OCR, AI and backups require separate review. We do not infer an LSO rule mandating Canada-only storage from these hosting facts.
Cost follows the shape of the work
Example, assumptions shown: 40 completed retainers with six ordinary Make actions each gives 240 credits before polling and other overhead. A daily sweep over 300 matters, modelled as 30 × (1 + 300 × 2), gives 18,030 credits. The higher-tier Make price was not verified.
The same daily sweep could start one n8n batch per day, but its actual count depends on triggers, retries and sub-workflow design. Neither example establishes that one product always costs less. Include Clio, signature, hosting and maintenance costs. See the shared pricing explanation for dated native-currency prices.
Choose the decision your firm faces
Lawyers compares a reviewed retainer handoff and trust-record preparation. Paralegals starts with email, Sheets and Calendar. Personal injury firms separates records-request metadata from sensitive medical documents.
Monitor identity, authentication and completeness
Match the exact contact and matter identifiers before proposing a write. Send ambiguous matches to staff. Test revoked credentials, incomplete source reads and a destination timeout. Reconcile the destination before retrying; a duplicated matter is not a successful recovery.
Build references live in the n8n legal collection. Related task formats are in Grok Bot, OpenClaw, Dots and document automation. Return to all comparisons.

Frequently asked questions
Does either platform guarantee legal compliance?
No. Tool selection does not establish confidentiality, authority, privilege protection or correct legal dates. The responsible licensee assesses the proposed process.
Does either connect to PCLaw or Actionstep?
No native connection was verified in this review. That is an evidence limit, not a finding that supported integration is impossible.
Does the LSO require Canadian storage?
This review does not establish a general LSO Canada-only storage requirement. A licensee must assess the applicable duties and the full data path.
Do we need either tool if we use Clio?
Not necessarily. Inspect Clio’s existing signature, task and integration features before adding another processor.
