Make or n8n for a small Ontario firm on Clio?
Compare Make’s Clio and Docusign operations with custom n8n logic. Keep conflict decisions, trust approval and client identity checks with the licensee.
Not legal advice. Rules are summarised for planning. A licensee confirms every date and scope decision.
Separate signed paperwork from authority to open a matter
Make is a good candidate for a short Docusign-to-Clio handoff. It publishes Watch Envelope Completed and a Clio Manage app. First check whether the native Clio/Docusign integration already meets the need.
Use a proposed matter record until staff confirm the exact contact, engagement version and conflict-review status. A signed envelope alone should not override the firm’s acceptance process.
Compare the exception work
| Decision, checked 17 October 2026 | Make candidate | n8n candidate |
|---|---|---|
| Completed envelope to reviewed matter draft | Published app operations reduce some custom API work | Custom/API route requires its own operation test |
| Similar names or adverse-party matches | Prepare possible matches for lawyer review | Maintained code can prepare candidates; the lawyer still decides |
| Trust-record preparation | Test approved read/export operations | Test controlled local comparison logic and reviewer evidence |
A similarity score cannot clear a conflict. Keep the matching evidence and decision owner beside the proposed record.
Prepare the monthly trust comparison
Not legal advice. By-Law 9 section 22(2), reproduced in the LSO’s February 2026 report, specifies a 25-day creation period after month end for the listed records. The responsible licensee confirms the current rule and applicable records before using a schedule.
A proposed workflow assembles the bank reconciliation, trust journals and client listing, preserving source references and unexplained differences. It prepares the review pack. The licensee verifies the comparison and signs off; this design does not authorise trust postings or transfers. Keep retention requirements tied to the precise record class rather than one blanket period.
Track the right authorization category
Not legal advice. The LSO’s own authorization notice distinguishes accounts existing when the requirement took effect from new accounts. Existing-account authorizations are due March 31, 2027. Beginning May 1, 2026, a new account requires authorization within 30 days of opening. A licensee confirms which category applies and retains submission evidence. A reminder is not the authorization itself.
The direct current By-Law page could not be retrieved during this review. Use the current LSO text in the firm’s final professional check. The primary report and implementation notice support the planning distinctions above.
Keep confidentiality in the tool decision
Not legal advice. The licensee assesses professional confidentiality, privilege and applicable privacy duties. A Canadian hosting choice is a design control, not a legal compliance certificate. n8n Cloud lists Frankfurt; Make’s organisation regions are US/EU. Self-hosted n8n can keep its local storage on a Canadian server, while outbound apps, OCR, AI and backups require separate review. We do not infer an LSO rule mandating Canada-only storage from these hosting facts.
Test before connecting real matters
Use synthetic clients with similar names, a replayed envelope and one unresolved trust difference. Expect staff review for identity ambiguity and a held reconciliation. Confirm a failed read cannot produce a complete pack. No legal account or trust ledger was connected in this research.

Frequently asked questions
Can a tool clear a conflict?
It can prepare candidate matches and evidence. A lawyer decides the conflict question and matter acceptance.
Does the trust-pack workflow move money?
No. The design prepares records and exceptions for professional review. It does not authorise trust postings or transfers.
Does March 31, 2027 apply to every new trust account?
No. The LSO notice distinguishes existing accounts from accounts opened from May 1, 2026, which require authorization within 30 days. A licensee confirms applicability.
